Intro to Obstacles - Contacts and Weaves
4 weeks
Prerequisite: Preparative Obedience or approval from instructor **NOTE** Dog must be reliable off-lead and at least 6 months of age-1 year for full height equipment Build your dog’s confidence and have fun while learning a fast paced and exciting sport! This class is designed to work on agility obstacles individually to insure understanding of communication from you to your dog before connecting multiple obstacles together. This class is broken into 4 week sessions with greater focus on each obstacle. Our goal is to build a strong foundation without the added stress of "too much too soon".
Level 1 Coursework
5 weeks Prerequisite: Intro to Obstacles or approval of instructor Dog must be at least 1 year of age Learn flow of agility courses and how to properly direct your dog through multiple obstacles. We begin with linking 2-3 obstacles and grow our courses with the progress of the dog/handler team. Open Agility Ongoing $15 - floor available for 1.5 hr Prerequisite: Instructor approval for individual work/None for guided work **NOTE** Dog must be reliable off-lead and at least 6 months of age-1 year for full height equipment This is your opportunity to work in a climate controlled environment at your own pace-whether fine tuning specific obstacles, working on drills or just starting out. Equipment setup will be posted each week before class, and requests will be honored as much as possible. Drill sheets also available for more advanced work.
Intro to Hunt
4 weeks Prerequisite: Puppy HeadStart or Basic Obedience This class teaches you how to direct your hunting dog’s natural instinct to the prey you choose. It is designed strictly to give an outlet for your dog in a manner in which nature intended-NOT to teach hunting skills to the handlers. If you do intend to hunt with your dog, we have a variety of items to insure he/she learns the correct prey for your hunting preference. Field Commands 8 weeks Prerequisite: Advanced Obedience or approval from instructor **NOTE** Dog MUST be reliable off-lead Teach your dog common commands used in hunting situations. Work is done on verbal commands, hand signals, whistle signaling, direction signaling and bird handling. Dogs will learn to honor, flush on command, hold position and retrieve without damaging birds.
Prerequisite: Basic Obedience and dog must be at least 8 months to 1 year of age Northern breeds and draft dogs are bred with the desire and ability to pull. Also many classic “protection breeds” are not as apt to enjoy the dog sports involving high speeds and agile talents. We offer weight pull as a healthy alternative to put these musclebound guys and gals to work. This class will help you familiarize your dog to the necessary equipment and commands, while our experienced instructor helps to monitor your dog’s progress for safety. This class is offered bi-weekly, on a drop-in basis and is not limited to the breed classes listed above-bring out your little dogs and see how they like our small cart.
Go-To-Ground
5 weeks Prerequisite: Puppy HeadStart or Basic Obedience Introduce your small terrier or Dachshund to a constructive outlet for the natural tendencies of digging, barking, scratching and uncontrolled prey drive. We will start with above ground tracking work, introduction to tunnels, and move onto rodent work and underground tracking in varying difficulties of courses.
Prerequisite: Advanced Obedience, Canine Good Citizen Certification Therapy dogs are a wonderful encouragement to the elderly or infirmed. In many instances, they bring a bright spot to the day of those who would not normally have much reason to smile. This class will go over many distractions that are not normally encountered such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and medicinal smells. **Please Note** This class is not required before attending a certification exam, and Jumpin JACS does not currently offer a therapy dog certification. This class is designed to assist you and your dog in preparing for an exam by one of the many agencies that do offer certifications.
Terrier Sports
8 weeks
This is a temporary program we are instituting until we have our full complement of the different sports in place. We will touch on Go To Ground in our above ground see-through tunnel, terrier racing, obstacle racing and scent tracking. This curriculum is designed to give handlers an idea of where they can go with their dogs and what the different sports are actually like.
Scent Tracking
6 weeks
Do you have a dog with its nose constantly on the ground? Then you have an excellent candidate for our scent tracking class. We begin by teaching the dog to focus on a specific scent, and then move on to how to follow that scent. As the dogs progress, we take our show on the road and develop scent trails in a variety of environments and with increasing levels of difficulty. We also can work with air-scenting if that is your preference. Air scenting is a common technique for dogs/handlers wishing to move into Search-and-Rescue work. Drop-In Flyball $10/session or 6 sessions for $50 Prerequisite: Advanced Obedience or approval from instructor **NOTE** Dog MUST be reliable off-lead, and at least 6 months of age, large and giant breeds 10 months of age This is a fast-paced and exciting relay sport to engage in with your dog. Learn how to guide your dog through the course, work the ball-box to obtain the tennis ball, cross past other dogs in a charged state of mind, and gain valuable exercise. This is a wonderful opportunity for high-energy dogs to expend that energy in a focused and fun way. This is a weekly class, attended on a drop-in basis allowing you to be very flexible as consecutive attendance is not mandatory (though it does help hone your skills dramatically). We encourage you to take advantage of our other wonderful dog sport classes in additional to flyball, to keep those dogs working for you during the week!
Canine Choreography
6 weeks
Have you seen those videos or demonstrations where the dog and handler are performing amazing coordinated tricks to music? Have you ever wondered how they accomplish it? Then this is the class for you! We teach a variety of fun and fascinating elements, and then help you develop them into a choreographed routine. This is a great way to spend time with your dog and really increasing your bond in a low-pressure setting. Our last night of class will be a showcase of everyone's routines, and the best ones may be asked to perform at our various community events!
Puppy Social
Bring your puppy in for a half hour session of playtime, while you take advantage of the opportunity to learn body language, appropriate dog-to-dog and dog-to-stranger interaction, and tips and techniques to handle challenging behaviors at home. No pre-registration necessary.
Clicks for Tricks
6 weeks
Did you ever see a dog wave? Or how about sneeze on command? Even go get a blanket if its "cold"? In this class your dog will learn fun tricks like these and more using clicker training techniques. Whether hoping for the next Pet Star or looking for something fun to do with your dog (or even just wanting to amaze your family and friends) this class is the one to get you there. Previous clicker training recommended but not necessary.
