We are committed to rehoming hounds to a suitable situation.  Our preference is to place field-tested dogs in hunting households.  We also consider homes that intend to do activities such as Search and Rescue, Agility or Obedience as long as there is an experienced dog/hound person in the household.  Occasionally we do have dogs for adoption other than hounds/hound mixes, although we try to direct our efforts to successfully help hounds find their forever home.

Coonhounds can make wonderful family dogs as long as they have an outlet for their natural instincts.  Coonhounds are not guard dogs, as they may alert you to visitors but will generally accept everyone.  As a rule, coonhounds are good with other dogs and with children.  Small animals such as cats, rabbits, ferrets or anything else that can be considered prey could be in grave danger, so we strongly recommend seeking another breed if you have these as members of your household.  Although coonhounds can do very well inside, many of the dogs we see have been raised as outside dogs.  In this instance housebreaking/training manners may be necessary if you choose to move them indoors.  Although not a companion breed, they are very people-oriented, and can be somewhat clumsy in the house around small children.  As with any breed, it is not recommended you leave them alone with young children.  This is not due to aggression, but more likely them knocking over children in their exuberance to be part of playtime.  A working coonhound tends to be very good at laying around for much of the day, however with no way of releasing energy they can become destructive-and very effective at it.  If you are simply looking for a family member, we can suggest a number of rescues with large varieties of breeds that will be more suited to a non-working home.

If you have need to place a hound, please contact us for an evaluation.
