Housebreaking #1 rule of potty training-if your dog has an accident, its not "bad dog", but "bad owner"!!
If you have a pup, remember that he/she does not yet know what you expect, and generally has very little short-term memory. This is why repetition and guidance are so important. Correcting a dog for not knowing what you want is not only unproductive, but unfair.
1. Remove dog from crate and put on leash to take outside.* 2. Walk to where you wish to designate the "potty area". 3. Repeatedly tell dog to "go potty", "use bathroom", or whatever command you will attribute to him doing his business. This should last until dog eliminates or 10-15 minutes has past. If dog eliminates, praise very highly. If not, step 4. 4. Replace dog in crate for approximately 10 minutes. Repeat steps 1-4 until dog eliminates outside.
*This assumes you are crate training-if not, dog should have a "safe zone" where he can be contained for safety and ease of training.
High praise Definition: Your neighbors should think you are crazy
Timing: After eating or drinking As soon as he is removed from crate Upon waking Before bed Every 15 minutes while playing Please do not correct your dog for having an accident. If he is a pup, he does not have training yet to fully understand what you wish of him, and possibly not yet the bladder control (depending on age). If he is an older dog that only has periodic accidents, unless you catch him in the act he will not know why you are correcting him. Rubbing his nose in it does not work!!!!!!
